Leadership & Staff
Sandra Hegland brings more than 20 years of healthcare management expertise to HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Austin. A Missouri native, she received her associate degree in nursing from Mineral Area College in Missouri, and later graduated from the University of Phoenix with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and a master’s degree in business administration. Her expertise in leading successful patient outcomes and overall hospital performance is a result of her passion for mentoring leaders, building teams and coordinating strategic planning.
Shane Ross, M.D.
Dr. Ross brings more than 17 years healthcare experience to HealthSouth. Dr. Ross is certified by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is proficient in spasticity management, soft tissue trigger management, pain management, wound management and surgical debridement. His professional interests also include comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation, program development, neurorehabilitation (stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury), electrodiagnostic medicine and cardiac rehabilitation.
Shane Ross, M.D. is an independent private practice physician whose office is located at the hospital.
Director of Pharmacy
Peter has worked in both hospital and retail pharmacies and has extensive experience as a clinical and administrative pharmacist. He is a direct contributor to the high quality delivery of pharmaceutical services at HealthSouth Austin. Peter graduated with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, and has a master’s degree in healthcare pharmacy administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
Director of Marketing Operations
Denize has been in the healthcare field for more than 30 years. She started her seven-year nursing career in inpatient rehabilitation in 1986. Denize has been in healthcare sales since 1991, having experience in working LTAC, inpatient rehabilitation, home health and hospice. She is a licensed vocational nurse (LPN). Denize graduated from Howard College in 1983 and from Excelsior College in 2009 with an associate’s degree in general studies with a sociology focus. She is currently pursuing her BSN.
Kristi Keene comes to HealthSouth Austin with over a decade of experience in inpatient rehabilitation working both clinically and in administration. Prior to coming to HealthSouth, Kristi worked as rehabilitation hospital director of therapy services. A graduate from Texas State University and received a master's degree in communication disorders in 2000, Kristi is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist.
Chief Financial Officer
Pam joined HealthSouth Austin in 2000. Her 26 years of healthcare management experience includes Medicare auditing, hospital turn-arounds and start-ups, acute care hospitals, specialty hospitals, MSO's, physician practices and pharmaceuticals. Pam graduated from St. Mary’s with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and economics.
Plant Operations Director
Ricky Nevels retired from the Air Force in 1996 and began working in hospitals in the Austin area shortly thereafter. He manages the facility operations that include the areas of the environment of care, plant operations / maintenance, dietary, purchasing and environmental services.
Director of Human Resources
Michael brings more than five years of human resource experience to HealthSouth. He values employees and is dedicated to providing them support and meeting their needs. Michael graduated in 2008 from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, with a bachelor's degree in communication studies. He is currently pursuing his PHR certification.
Director of Therapy Operations
Liz Warfield, director of therapy operations, has worked at HealthSouth Austin since 2009 as a speech therapist and team lead. She completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Texas at Austin and is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist (CCC-SLP). She holds additional certifications in Vital Stim and Lee Silverman’s Voice Treatment.
