Leadership & Staff
Sandra Hegland brings more than 20 years of healthcare management expertise to HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Austin. A Missouri native, she received her associate degree in nursing from Mineral Area College in Missouri, and later graduated from the University of Phoenix with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and a master’s degree in business administration. Her expertise in leading successful patient outcomes and overall hospital performance is a result of her passion for mentoring leaders, building teams and coordinating strategic planning.
Maria Arizmendez, M.D.
Dr. Arizmendez is a Mayo-trained, board certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician whose practice focuses on providing rehabilitative care to patients with a wide spectrum of neurologic disorders and peripheral vascular disease, including those at high risk for amputation. Dr. Arizmendez is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Maria Arizmendez, M.D. is an independent private practice physician whose office is located at the hospital.
Human Resource Director
Debbie is a skilled human resource specialist with more than 20 years experience in human resource management. She completed her bachelor’s degree in human resource management from St. Edwards University, is a certified senior professional in human resources (SPHR), a certified personnel consultant (CPC) and has received specialized training as a credentialed mediator. Debbie is also a member of the National Society for Human Resource Management and of their local chapter.
Director of Pharmacy
Peter has worked in both hospital and retail pharmacies and has extensive experience as a clinical and administrative pharmacist. He is a direct contributor to the high quality delivery of pharmaceutical services at HealthSouth Austin. Peter graduated with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, and has a master’s degree in healthcare pharmacy administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
Director of Quality
Wayne has more than 30 years in nursing and 18 years in healthcare quality. Wayne received his bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Akron in Ohio and his master's degree from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. In 1991, he received a certification as a Professional of Healthcare Quality.
Director of Case Management
Linda has worked at HealthSouth Austin since 1991 and has extensive healthcare experience encompassing both inpatient psychiatric and rehabilitation hospitals. She was recently selected as a task force member for the development and implementation of the company-wide care management program. Linda earned her master’s degree from Texas Woman’s and has served as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and Certified Case Manager for HealthSouth. She is a member of the Austin Case Management Association.
Kristi Keene comes to HealthSouth Austin with over a decade of experience in inpatient rehabilitation working both clinically and in administration. Prior to coming to HealthSouth, Kristi worked as rehabilitation hospital director of therapy services. A graduate from Texas State University receiving a master's degree in communication disorders in 2000, Kristi is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist.
Chief Financial Officer
Pam joined HealthSouth Austin in 2000. Her 26 years of healthcare management experience includes Medicare auditing, hospital turn-arounds and start-ups, acute care hospitals, specialty hospitals, MSO's, physician practices and pharmaceuticals. Pam graduated from St. Mary’s with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and economics.
Plant Operations Director
Ricky Nevels retired from the Air Force in 1996 and began working in hospitals in the Austin area shortly thereafter. He manages the facility operations that include the areas of the environment of care, plant operations / maintenance, dietary, purchasing and environmental services.
